WZZA

WZZA was the first locally owned, FCC licensed, African American radio station in the Shoals. It was founded by Bob Carl and Odessa Bailey in 1972, and is still operated by their daughter, Tori. Bob Carl Bailey was an entrepreneur and philanthropist, known for helping the community and its citizens. Bailey often provided jobs and financial assistance to community members, purchasing food and fuel to provide heat for homes, assisting with utilities, tuition, paying mortgages for families and churches. He used his station to provide a platform for social commentary. The Baileys passion for upholding Bob Carl’s legacy is evident in every aspect of WZZA, from the music that is played to the forums they hold tackling the tough topics that impact the African American community. “We are the voice to and for our community. We have the courage of our convictions. We provide edu-tainment (educating while entertaining). That’s what this radio station does. We represent and advocate for the demographic that is often underserved.” —Tori Bailey
