I feel like the older generation handed off that torch as soon as we started digging in. I would say eventually we will be able to look back and there will be a moment that we can pinpoint. It’s stupid, but I call it the Beethoven 5th moment. Jaws dropped when he went into the fourth movement, because he didn’t stop between the 3rd and 4th movement. It had never been done before, jaws dropped, I like to imagine. That one little moment changed what their idea of the rules were. Okay, so we don’t have to follow the rules exactly. It took some crazy person like Beethoven to do that. It kind of led us into our romantic period which got us out of that baroque, stiff everything and started moving us toward the music we know now. We will look back. We will find find our Beethoven’s 5th moment, the moment where somebody did something and it moved it all into this new direction. It could have already happened; we don’t know yet.
